MESSI CLOSES GAP ON RONALDO

Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi has been able to close the gap on rival Cristiano Ronaldo on the list of the leading goalscorers in the Champions League after he found the back of the net during the disappointing defeat at the hands of French club Paris Saint Germain (PSG) last night. Lionel Messi and his Barcelona teammates were on the end of a 4-1 thumping at the hands of visitors PSG in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Juventus attacker Cristiano Ronaldo is fondly called Mr. Champions League as he has 132 goals in the competition. Lionel Messi is the closest player to him and the petite Argentine was on 118 goals before Barcelona played hosts to PSG at the Nou Camp on Tuesday night. Messi took his tally to 119 goals thus closing the gap on Cristiano Ronaldo when he gave Barcelona the lead during the PSG game.

Lionel Messi was perfect from the spot after PSG defender LaryvinKurzawa had been penalisedfor a foul on Frenkie De Jong in the box. KylianMbappe scored the equaliser for the away team off the assist from the aforementioned Kurzawa in the first half before he completed his brace in the second half. Italian international Moise Kean added a third goal before the unplayable Mbappe scored his third and the fourth goal for PSG to make it a memorable night for the French giants. PSG were able to take a 4-1 lead from the first leg ahead of the second leg in three weeks' time.
Cristiano Ronaldo can regain his 14-goal lead over Lionel Messi or extend it when Juventus take on hosts FC Porto of Portugal in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday night. Juventus didn't have the best of preparations ahead of the game following their 1-0 loss at Napoli in the Italian Serie A over the weekend.
