Lionel Messi scored his first goal for new team Paris Saint Germain (PSG) as they claimed astatement win over Manchester City who were last season's finalists. The ex-Barcelona superstar scored the clinching goal in the second half to seal a 2-0 home win over the Premier League holders in Group A.

PSG were able to pay Manchester City back in their own coin after they were beaten in each of the two legs when the two teams met in the semi-finals last season. The Premier League champions secured a place in the final ahead of the French Ligue 1 leaders after winning 2-1 in each of the two legs to seal a 4-2 aggregate win.

Manchester City had the lion share of possession against PSG but they failed to take the chances that came their way and ultimately paid the price with defeat. It must also be pointed out that PSG defended well as a unit and they were able to answer some of the questions posed by fans and the media at the start of the season. A lot of football stakeholders had wondered if the front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar and KylianMbappe would be able to function well. On the evidence of the City game, the three attackers showed that they can function together and not at the detriment of the team.
Senegalese midfielder IdrissaGueye was an unlikely scorer as PSG took an early lead on eight minutes. The best City chance of the game fell to Portuguese international Bernado Silva who could only hit the crossbar from close range via the rebound from Raheem Sterling’s header which hit the crossbar.
Messi wrapped up the win for PSG on 74 minutes off the assist from KylianMbappe to open his account for the Paris-based club. He was able to close the gap on Cristiano Ronaldo on the all-time Champions League scoring chart. Manchester United attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has 135 goals, while the aforementioned Messi is now on 121 goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo can add to his Champions League tally when Manchester United take on Spanish team Villarreal at home on Wednesday night in what's a repeat of the Europa League final last season.
